The video store Best Place Ever is hosting a one-time screening of the animated film "Sita Sings the Blues" Nov. 14 at the Varsity Theater.
The film, created by Nina Paley, mixes cutouts, collages, photographs, painted backdrops and traditional animation for a retelling of the sanscrit epic "Ramayana." In this version Sita is dumped via email by her husband. Three shadow puppets arrive to narrate Sita's tragic/comedic undertakings.
The event will also feature giveaways of Criterion Collection DVDs, free rental tickets and beverages. Paley will directly receive a portion of the proceeds. Tickets are $8 in advance at Best Place Ever, $10 the day of the screening.
