Awesome atmosphere, fun staff, TONS of fun!

Guaranteed to be entertained, the staff is a lot of fun, the show is really interactive (there's plenty of opportunities to get your friends on stage, contests/games, request songs), love the martini menu, and pretty good food too! Great place to host business/private parties in their upstairs mezzanine area!!

Worst Bar Ever
By WDM18, March 6, 2010

Bad staff and service, the bartenders are all slow and rude. We were told by a waitress who wasn't serving us that we needed to tip better or we wouldn't get served anymore. They don't like people under 40 yrs. old. I've been to other piano bars and this one needs to figure it out because it sucks.

Overated

First of all I have to say I used to kinda like Blue Moon until tonight. I went there because it is a good place to go in West Des Moines. I have a lot of friends there and usually spend a fair amount of money there. But tonight was the last time that I will ever go back. It is October 30, 2009 and I show up with a costume for the costume party that was going on in the area. My girl and I walk in and ask the little guy working the door if the costume party was still going on here and he said, yeah there is still a lot of people in costumes in there". So my girlfriend and I pay the $10 cover and walk in to discover that there is no one in costume in the place. We went back to the door and asked why there were no one in costume and he told us that the party moved to Cabaret a while ago! We were not there even 30 seconds and I asked him if we could have our cover back and he just pointed at the sign that said no refunds.. What a joke! The little guy working the door lied to us and treated us like crap and I will never go back there again. Most of the acts there are repeats and are hardly entertaining anyways.. Go to Grand Piano Bistro instead.

Better than I expected!

I love the piano bar in the East Village. I was eager to try Blue Moon, but had heard some bad things from a group of friends that visited. We made sure to go really early, because that was one of the gripes from our disgruntled friends. I can totally see what they mean, as we arrived around 6pm for dinner and it was already starting to fill out. Having a table to sit at really made a difference and let us enjoy the entertainment. We ended up having a blast and the food was delicious too! The drinks were a bit pricey, but thats its the same way at Grand Piano Bistro and was what I expected.

Fun -- but lousy food and no seating.

I've been to Blue Moon about a dozen times. It's a fun Friday or Saturday night, if you get there by 6 to reserve seating. But the food is just awful. I would rather eat at Legends or Perkins. I am honestly baffled by how they're even able to create such lousy food.

Terrible

Will never go back. Arrived at 6Pm to find a cover charge for entertainment that didn't start until 8PM, Could not get service so ordered 2 beers from the bar at $3.50 and paid with a $10.00 bill. Did not receive change. 30% tip was assuming a lot. Could not get anyone to wait on us to order food, so left and went to a different restaurant. Returned and was told we had to wait in line to get in. Ordered to more beers and again had to order form the bar and paid $10.00 and did not receive change. Des Moines Register and a TV station might like to do a story on how this establishment conducts business. It is popular now, but won't last.

Seriously????

This is by far the worst bar/restaurant I have ever been to!! My biggest complaint was that after paying cover and ordering over $100 in drinks and food, we were told that they were not allowed to give us a glass of water; "It's our new policy, so people don't just sit at tables and drink water all night." We were told that if we wanted water, we would need to buy a bottle...now that is just ridiculous! And, to be honest, the music isn't even worth listening to. One of the piano players was great. However, the other two were totally crass. I was completely insulted by many of their offesive remarks. I understand that they were supposed to be "in good fun" but you have to draw the line somewhere!

West Glen Fun

Was caught off guard at the door cover, a tad surprising--but was quick redeemed by the quality of music. After being recently engaged my Fiance and I were called onstage for a version of the innapropriate hokey pokey. Had a fantastic time and have gone back often.

Worst place I have ever been
By jennie3517, January 1, 2009

I have tried to give this place a few chances to sho me that it is worth paying a cover charge and expensive drinks, but the entertainment, the staff and management have fallen flat each time. The entertainers are really not good, I've heard the same songs and same jokes each time I have been there. The service is a direct reflection of the management. The managers are rude, our table had a complaint and asked for a manager. The male manager came over he was really rude and we were not satisfied with the results. It took a very long time to get our food (and drinks) and it was cold and inedible. We will not be returning to the Blue Moon.

A Unique Experience!

I never knew how badly Central Iowa needed something like the Blue Moon until I actually went there. Sure, I had been to dueling piano shows in resort locations, but at those places it was just beer and pianos. Not bad, but limited.

Blue Moon offers all that and more. It is an upscale bar. The piano act is as good or better than any I had seen in Vegas or Texas. The menu is tasty and, when I have been for lunch, the place is a lot more resturant than beer joint.

My favorite part is the diversity of the crowd. Especially before 10:00 there are just as many 40+'ers in the audience as there are 20-somethings. What could be better than sharing a cocktail with your parents as you sway together and sing "Piano Man" or "Sweet Caroline" together? After midnight the average age definately drops as the younger crowd parties until bar time.

My only beef could be on the drink prices. Top shelf booze comes with a top shelf price tag. I guess that is only to be expected from a upscale venue in West Glen. But I also think that a "fishbowl" drink, which looks like it would serve 5 - 10 people, would be quite a value at $20.
