Pinball. It’s one of the few bar games you can play by yourself and people don’t automatically assume you have no friends. It has old-school flair, bright lights and sounds, and only requires one simple move — a flip of your fingers. The objective is simple: Score as many points as possible, and don’t let the ball fall through the flippers. Here are three great places to play.
1. Gas Lamp, 1501 Grand Ave.
Why would a bar with a throwback vibe not have pinball? The Gas Lamp has two machines, located next to the pool table. If your pool game is lousy, hit up the pinball machines.
The machines: “Dark Knight” and “Playboy”
While you’re there: Gas Lamp has live music almost every night of the week, so if you get finger fatigue, head to the dance floor for a break.
Best deal: Don’t miss “Everybody Gets the Schlitz” hour every day from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., when good ol’ Schlitz beer is only $1.50.
2. The Underground, 500 E. Locust St.
Nestled in the East Village, it feels like a secret spot to imbibe, and work on your pinball skills. Stop in for music, beer and a game.
The machines: “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” and “The Twilight Zone”
While you’re there: Check out live music several nights a week, from cover bands to DJs. If you’ve got a musical talent, stop by for Open Jam on Wednesday nights with The $nack$ from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Best deal: Enjoy $2.50 beers and well drinks during happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Monday night is guest bartender night, with $2.50 beers and wells .
3. Daytona’s All Sports Cafe, 4875 Merle Hay Road
Daytona’s is all sports — namely, racing — but it’s a great place for games, too. Between innings or during commercial breaks, head to the pinball machine for a game.
The machine: “Dale Earnhardt Jr. Limited Edition,” of course
While you’re there: Nosh on some pizza and wings. Can you handle the “crash and burn” habanero sauce? Better order a glass of water.
Best deal: If you get the itch for pinball in the morning, all of Daytona’s breakfast items are $5, which includes a Bloody Mary.
