The scene: We arrived at Wellman’s about 6:30 p.m.; all of the tables were occupied and it remained that way until we left shortly after 8 p.m. Patrons spanned from 20- and 30somethings to families with kids, and though a few ordered items off the regular menu, most tables were littered with paper boats filled with all-you-can-eat wings or already consumed wings.
Thursdays are busy enough that nothing happens in a hurry; service was slow, which is expected with the volume of wings coming out of the kitchen. But while we waited, we had a big screen on which to watch the NFL football game as well as smaller screens for baseball.
Why it’s the best night to go: Wellman’s isn’t messing around on Thursday nights. A mixture of wings and drummmies are normally $8.99 and are instead offered all-you-can-eat for $6.99. The sizeable wings arrive tossed is sauces of various flavors of the patron’s choosing, including barbecue, honey citrus, teriyaki, hot buffalo, mild buffalo and sweet chili.
In addition, patrons drink free on Thursdays if it also happens to be the week of their birthday.
When else to go: The wings may be served all-you-can- eat and at a reduced price on Thursdays, but they’re always on the menu. Visit Wellman’s on Tuesdays for two-for-one drinks and trivia that starts at 9 p.m.
Football fans will be pleased to know that this bar with allegiances to the Iowa Hawkeyes offers $10 “Blue Collar Buckets” of Miller High Life or Pabst Blue Ribbon during college football games. In addition, brunch is served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as well as $5 bloody marys and mimosas on game days.
