Drinks on Deck: El Patio
Shawna Feeley, 26, left, Lori Helton, 36, and Roxana Beisch, 31, have drinks on El Patio's patio after work.

The scene: Ask to be seated on the patio at Des Moines' oldest Mexican restaurant, and you'll wind through the cozy, dim dining room to a floral oasis just off Ingersoll Avenue. The patio here is really more of a deck that holds about 40 people at four- and two-seater tables, the bigger of which boast rainbow-colored umbrellas. I counted no fewer than 50 hanging baskets and flowerpots bursting with annuals in full bloom, giving the effect of a secret garden instead of a Tex-Mex watering hole. Big trees made it a shady spot, and lanterns and string lights suggested a glowing experience after dark.

What we ordered: El Patio is known for the margaritas (try the blue margarita made with Juarez tequila, triple sec, lime juice and blue curacao), but I went with a simple glass of sangria ($4). Mine came filled with fresh fruit, and I felt taken care of with chips, salsa and a pitcher of water at the table, too.

Who we met: This patio is family-friendly, but smaller tables also make it a romantic place for couples on a date. I introduced myself to three friends at El Patio for post-work drinks. They tackle a different patio each week and had good things to say about this one. "I'd give it a 10 for ambiance," said Shawna Feeley, 27. "It doesn't feel like we're in Des Moines." They also liked that, even though they were seated by the speakers, the music didn't overpower their conversation.

Why you should go: Best for a Wednesday night, this patio will get you over the work-week hump with its full menu, refreshing drinks and calming scene. Park on 37th Street for an excuse to stroll through the quaint North of Grand neighborhood before you head home.
