The scene: When The Gas Lamp opened in the former Blues on Grand last April, it quickly became a favorite Western Gateway hangout as well as a venue for bands of the blues, punk and rock varieties. The interior reflects that musical fusion with grit, without being grungy. The newly added patio is an extension of that sensibility.
What I ordered: We missed the “Everybody Gets the Schlitz” Happy Hour that occurs daily from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., when Schlitz is $1.50. So instead I opted for a bottle of Stella Artois at $4.
What I saw: It was a Monday night, so we weren’t surprised by the lack of bargoers. There were about five people at the bar, and none on the patio, despite its tremendous view of the sculpture park. To the patrons’ credit, it was a bit cold. But since the patio is enclosed on three sides and opens to Grand Avenue via garage doors, the patio maintains a comfortable temperature. We sat at a picnic table next to a rusty gas pump and were eventually joined by two smokers who looked as though they came straight from a day job. A passing homeless man tapped one on the shoulder and mumbled that he wanted to beat him up because he was wearing a tie, a threat that thankfully never panned out.
Why you should go: The Gas Lamp oozes rock ’n’ roll charm, and its patio is no exception. The Western Gateway is an up-and-coming neighborhood, and its view of the sculpture garden allows one to absorb the arts while also imbibing. And if you’re into that sort of thing, the men’s bathroom is slathered with photos of naked women.

Best for: A drink and a show. And if you’re a straight man, just about every inch of the men’s bathroom.
