The scene/what I saw: We arrived at The Keg Stand on a Thursday night and could barely find a parking spot.
On the outside, the West Des Moines bar was packed with people enjoying the patio, and it was just as crowded inside as teams geared up for trivia night. We snagged a table by the stage, ordered food and a few drinks, and were treated to upbeat (and really loud) music spun by BC Productions — which also emceed trivia night.
Why it’s the best night to go: The Keg Stand is a hoppin’ place to be on a Thursday night. Although the spot has specials each day of the week, it’s Thursday night that attracts dozens of regulars for mug night and trivia night.
Mugs cost $10 each and can be used for $2 domestics or $4 imports.
Once 8:30 p.m. hits, the games begin. About 10 teams (with names like Unicorn Kisses and Go Go Power Rangers) do their best to answer quasi- grueling questions until 10:30 p.m. Trivia night is competitive — after eight weeks the winning team gets a free keg party. Not bad for answering a few questions correctly.
When else to go: Although Thursday is a great night to go, it’s easy to have fun at The Keg Stand any day or night of the week. First off, there’s always a $1 beer available.
On top of that, daily specials include happy hour 3-7 p.m. Monday through Friday with $2 domestic bottles and draws, $2 wells, $3 calls and imports and $4 bombs and top-shelf liquor. Then, there are the nightly specials available 7 p.m.- close. Highlights include $1 domestic draws, two-for-one shots and bombs on Mondays; half-price wells, calls, bottles and draws on Wednesdays; plus happy- hour pricing all day Sundays.
