The look: Wellman's has been an Ingersoll staple since its birth in 1982. The large pub is decorated with the usual bar paraphernalia, all of which has probably been hanging in the same spot for decades. (The Budweiser Clydesdale team - rotating inside an old light hanging above the bar - definitely looks like it has been trotting in the same circle for 27 years.) The fuzzy pictures of Wrigley Field still hang on the walls, and the yellowed Budweiser clock still ticks. The actual bar is large, with plenty of stools, or you can grab one of many booths or tables. Now that it's nice out, hang out on their shaded patio, which has its own bar, so you never have to go inside.
The crowd: Everybody knows everybody. If they don't know you, they will soon. Don't expect to sit alone or catch up with a friend - someone will always stop over to see if you want more company. According to long-time regular Dean Dickey, two groups pass through on a daily basis - the happy-hour crowd and the late-night crowd.
The two drinks: I noticed that everyone was drinking something different. Our bartender, Jaimi Giancola, 29, started me off with a Cheesecake cocktail (per Dickey's recommendation). The blend of Stoli Vanil, cranberry juice and 7Up tasted like I put a bite of fluffy cheesecake in my mouth. It didn't take long to finish. Next, Giancola mixed me up a CoCo Bomb - her version of a grape bomb. Made with strawberry vodka, grape pucker and sugar-free Red Bull, the taste was fruity and not too fizzy.
The grub: Try a burger, wings, pizza or other pub-style offerings. Wellman's also serves breakfast on weekends from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
The verdict: There is something for everyone at Wellman's. Sit outside and people-watch, play pool or just hang with friends. "This is a great small-town bar in a big city," Giancola said. "It is a favorite neighborhood bar and we have the best patio."
