Carl's Place
1620 Woodland Ave. - Des Moines515-243-9727
Hands down, the most interesting mix of people gather at Carl's. Not sure if it's considered a 'dive' bar, because it's actually a very popular place, but it has that dive bar feel. The staff are awesome, and I always have fun there. Sometimes it gets a little loud, especially on the weekends. Overall, it's got to be one of my favorite places to drink in Des Moines.
Report This ReviewCarl's place is a great place to go and relax and have a good time without feeling any pressure to impress anyone. The bartenders aren't always very attentive because they like to have a good time and mingle with the other customers but if you can live without being waited on hand and foot, you will get a great (strong!) drink and get your own one on one time with the guy! Highlights: the house shot and the rockin' jukebox!!!
Report This ReviewCarl's place is by far my favorite neighborhood dive bar in Des Moines...although I'm slightly biased since its in my neighborhood and I'm a regular.
Carl's is definitely a no frills bar while still supplying all the basics. Cheap drinks, pool, 4 dart boards, video games, a good jukebox, plenty of TVs with various sporting events and a wide variety of patrons.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights have become pretty busy at Carl's over the past couple months, and you'll see everyone from bikers (motor or pedal) to hippies to yuppies to surburbanites.
If you like the Locust Tap and miss Lucky's then you'll love Carl's...or if you just need a change of pace and are tired of the meat markets then Carl's will welcome you with open arms.
PS - don't forget to try the free meatballs if you come in on a friday after 4....they're GREAT!
