Vaudeville Mews
212 Fourth St. - Des Moines515-243-3270
The Mews is a great place for a wild mix of lots of different styles of music. Clearly they don't let just anybody play (it's not like open mike or anything), but at the same time they do indeed book a wide range of talent. It's fairly common to hear a college band you've never heard of, an up-and-coming local band, a regionally well established band, and occasionally a nationally established band -- all in the same night, and quite possibly all playing different (although usually complimentary) styles of music.
If you want to support the local music scene, the Mews is the place to do it.
Ignore the hater who posted that he got some static from the bartender. The bartender has always been friendly and easy going when I've been there... maybe Mr. Hater just walks around with a chip on his shoulder or something.
Report This ReviewOnce our only options downtown were Papa's Planet and Surf Shack. VM came along in 2005 and raised the Court Ave bar scene high above jello shots and crappy bar bands. This club has done more for the music scene in DSM than anywhere else. VM remains the best venue for live music in Des Moines and provides a great chance to see bands that otherwise would pass by the Capital City.
Report This ReviewDes Moines is lucky to have a club like the Mews. It is the only club that books talent for $12 and under worth seeing. The drinks are reasonably priced and strong. The outside bar (the Dumpster) rules when the weather is nice. Now if people would just attend the live music so this place doesn't go under. Not sure if DSM just has a lack of interest in the talent booked here or if the shows are not being promoted to its target audience but hopefully everyone comes around and DSM supports the live music we already have. Go to the Mews and support live music!
Report This ReviewWhat a joke. Another downtown spot that thinks its something it's not. the people are liberal snobs with closed minds. i seriously think that downtown bars' real business is HATING. tried having a discussion with the bartender, but since i didn't agree, he dismissed me with rudeness. Downtown will never live up to its potential until these little dumpy bars get replaced with places that spend money on their atmosphere and employees that don't hate their own lives.
