Like a fine wine, bars just get better with age. Here are some of the city’s oldest drinking establishments.

Alpine Tap Room

Alpine Tap Room

2720 Ingersoll Ave. - Des Moines
515-245-9717

Even the owner isn’t exactly sure how long this place has been around. His guess? 80 years. That places it in Prohibition, so that may be a little off. Our guess? Old.

Greenwood Lounge

3707 Ingersoll Ave. - Des Moines
515-277-1219

Open since 1933, the year Prohibition was repealed, there’s a lot of history at the legendary Greenwood.

Johnny's Hall of Fame

302 Court Ave. - Des Moines
515-280-6679

At 47, Johnny’s seems like a youngster, but it’s the oldest sports bar in town (and even got a facelift last year).

Locust Tap

434 E. Locust St. - Des Moines
515-243-9399

This bar has been around for 72 years, and some of the graffiti looks to be about the same age.

Hull Avenue Tavern

Hull Avenue Tavern

834 Hull Ave. - Des Moines
515-266-9338

An east-side institution since 1933. The Hull and the Greenwood were neck-and-neck in terms of who opened first once drinking was legal.

Waveland Coffee Shop

Waveland Coffee Shop

4704 University Ave. - Des Moines
515-255-5171

Don’t let the name fool you, this bar has been slinging suds for a long time. How long? We got an estimate of “Since the 20s.”
