Be prepared to wait...

My assessment is based on the Grand Piano Bistro as a lunch spot. As a place to grab lunch, the GPB is an enigma to me. I am employed in the East Village and have limited time for lunch most days. On those days, I know to avoid the GPB. Rarely have I been there and back to the office in less than 60 minutes. Lucca, Baratta's, Miyabi 9, Alba...all these places are much better at getting me in and out in less than an hour.

However, I do completely agree about the grilled romaine salad. Very good and should never leave the menu. The food has always been good...it would just be a much better lunch spot if the service was quicker.

Poor Sound Bad Smells
By organic_homestead, November 25, 2009

Perhaps it's because we ate so much for dinner (elsewhere), but the whole place reeked of bacon. Later I realized after reading more about the place, they cook up a lot of prosciutto. But after awhile we just couldn't take the smell anymore.

Also, the acoustics are terrible and standing at the bar, we really couldn't hear the pianists sing or what they were saying. There voices were very muffled. The place wasn't terribly crowded, just nicely full; but it was too difficult to enjoy when you couldn't hear. So we paid $5 cover charge each and stayed less than an hour.

PS I rated the food average, because this review wouldn't let me skip it. There needs to be an N/A option as we didn't eat any of their food.

One of my favorite nights in Des Moines!
By MegF, April 5, 2009

I havent heard eaten at the Grand Piano Bistro before, so this review is purely on the bar/entertainment aspect. Going to Grand Piano Bistro is one of my favorite things to do in Des Moines-and its perfect for a birthday party or special event. The atmosphere is sleek and urban, without the "loungy" feel that many piano bars have. I recommend going early to get a table, because once the performers start it gets packed very quickly. The duo Piano Palooza plays there weekly and they are extremely talented and energetic and make for a great night!

Metromix pick?
By Hojo, August 18, 2008

Why Metromix has this as a pick is beyond me. Consistently poor food and service mixed with a too-loud atmosphere and an overpriced menu make this place a total pass.
