4. Traditional Irish coffee
Made for us by: Stephen Pandullo, Flanagan’s Restaurant and Lounge, 2120 Ingersoll Ave.
Price: $6
What’s in it: Flanagan’s does Irish Coffee the traditional way — no Bailey’s here. To prove they’ve got it right, Pandullo showed me to the ladies’ rest room, where an authentic Irish banner describes the recipe with this rhyme: “One jigger o’ O’ Irish whiskey, top it wi’ black coffee. Stir in three lumps o’ sugar; then, when settles, add whipped cream an’ boy; oh boy yon’s quare stuff.” Pandullo drizzled the whip cream with crème de menthe and topped it with a cherry.
Why it’s perfect for winter: As the whipped cream melts, ribbons of cream trail down the side of the clear glass mug, like little icicles. It’ll get you through cold winter nights clear to St. Patrick’s day.
