Wednesday: It’s dice night at the Des Moines Social Club, 400 Walnut St. Buy a ticket for the Des Moines Social Club theater company’s performance of “The Last Five Years” for the total rolled on a pair of dice. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. and details the on-again/off-again love story of two New Yorkers.
Cool jazz in concert
Thursday: Listen to some cool riffs at “Music for Lovers and Friends.” The concert features Janey Hooper and the Turner Center Jazz Orchestra at the Turner Jazz Center, 2505 Carpenter Ave. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. with tickets $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
Turn up the BoomBox
Saturday: Join producers Russ Randolph and Zion Rock Godchaux of BoomBox as they blend rock, blues, psychadelia and funk at Wooly’s, 504 E. Locust St. Doors at 7:30 p.m., and the show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are available online at ticketfly.com. $14 in advance and $17 day of show. This is an all-ages event.
Great Ideas in Action
Saturday: Archie Powell & The Exports have been compared with early Elvis Costello and The Pixies. The band’s third album “Great Ideas in Action” has been praise by Billboard Magazine and Chicago Red Eye. This weekend the group brings its grittier version of power pop to the Vaudeville Mews, 212 Fourth St., where it will appear with The Olympics, The Wheelers and Doctor Dentist. Doors at 9:30 p.m. Show at 10 p.m. Tickets are $5. This is a 21+ event.
Love for sale
Saturday: Sometimes you really can buy love. Bachelors and bachelorettes will be for sale this weekend at the Des Moines sweethearts charity date auction that benefits Young Variety, a group that supports underprivileged children and children with special needs. The bidding starts at 7 p.m. at Jasper Winery, 2400 George Flagg Parkway, with a cocktail and appetizer reception beginning at 6 p.m.
Say ‘Cheers’
Friday: Raise a glass at the Des Moines Metro Opera Wine and Food Showcase. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. at the downtown Marriott, 700 Grand Ave., but VIP ticket holders receive early access at 4:30 p.m. Individual tickets are $50. Drinking with friends is even better. Tickets purchased in groups of six are $35/person, groups of 10 are $25 apiece.
