The Des Moines Metromix 2009 Costume Contest Presented by Miller Lite will take place Friday, Oct. 30 in the bars and restaurants of the historic Court District.
An outdoor station at Third Street and Court Avenue will open at 8 p.m. for the sale of $5 wristbands that will give you access to 15 bars full of live entertainment and all the other partygoers dressed up for Halloween. The bars will be selling wristbands, too.
When, where to get photographed in costume
Metromix/Juice will photograph costume contest entries from 10 p.m. to midnight at Court Avenue Restaurant and Brewing Co., 309 Court Ave. (For inspiration, take a peek at 150 photos of our favorite costumes from the last four years, as well as a gallery of the 2008 costume contest finalists. Pictured above are Jenny Carter and Janeen Goldken, both of Des Moines, who won our 2008 contest with their Battleship board-themed costumes.)
The cash prizes
First prize: $500
Second prize: $300
Third prize: $200
(If a group wins, the group must split the cash prize amongst themselves. The cash prize will not be awarded to each group member. Contestants can, however, enter both individually and as a group, for a maxium of two entries. Also read our complete, official rules.)
Winner selection
The Des Moines Metromix/Juice staff will select the top 10-20 costumes (based on creativity, originality, appearance and quality) and then put that pool of finalists to a public online vote from Nov. 1 through noon Nov. 6 at desmoines.metromix.com.
