appy 236th birthday America, you don’t look a day over 225. There will be plenty of Fourth of July events over the next 10 days or so (America gets at least a birthday week). These events extend a bit beyond fireworks in the park.
Yankee Doodle Pops
When: 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Iowa State Capitol Grounds.
Joseph Giunta conducts the Des Moines Symphony in its 18th Yankee Doodle Pops concert. The orchestra will perform patriotic favorites and a John Williams American Spectacular is the theme. Come early, because there will be a pre-concert Jazz in July performance by the Turner Center Jazz Orchestra starting at 6:30 p.m. Free.
Iowa Cubs vs. Omaha Storm Chasers
When: 7:05 p.m. July 4 at Principal Park, One Line Drive.
Before the Iowa Cubs take on Omaha, a special ceremony will be held with individuals taking the oath of U.S. citizenship.
After the Cubs (hopefully) win, Principal Park will be the site of a fireworks extravaganza. $7-$12.
Independence Day Street Celebration
When: 5 p.m. Tuesday in Railroad Park, 100 Fifth St., West Des Moines.
Valley Junction hosts its annual Independence Day street party with a concert by the Tony Valdez Large Band, a beer garden, food vendors following the West Des Moines Independence Day parade. Free.
Live at the Creek concert
When: 5 p.m. Sunday at the Jordan Creek Town Center Amphitheater, 101 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines.
This week’s Live at the Creek concert features a dueling piano performance by Pianopalooza, a wine and beer garden and a fireworks display that is visible from the amphitheater or the five restaurant patios that surround it.
