Wooly’s, 504 E. Locust St., regularly hosts free local bands as well as the Weekend Records electronic music showcase coordinated by John Solarz. This Friday, the venue hosts the Maximum Ames Records Free Show with Christopher the Conquered, Poison Control Center, Derek Lambert and the Prairie Fires, and Mumford’s at 10 p.m.

From 10 p.m.-midnight Fridays and Saturdays, Americana, 1312 Locust St., hosts “Nightcap” with free live music as well as $5 tapas and $2 PBRs and High Life, as well as wine and cocktail specials. Upcoming shows include DJ Tim Grimes (Friday), DJ Eight Ten (Saturday), The End (July 27), DJ Apolo & Diego (Aug. 3), DJ Touchnice (Aug. 11).

Maddy’s Again, 165 S. Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines, offers a free shot with each karaoke song you sing starting at 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

el Bait Shop, 200 S.W. Second St., offers some obscure beers, but they get into really small batches at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays when local home brewers give out free samples of their beer during the Jimmy Carter Happy Hour.

Every other Friday Jasper Winery hosts unWINEd from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Gray’s Lake, 1631 Fleur Drive. There’s free music, free wine samples and larger servings of wine and Madhouse beer for $5 each.
