The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band
Wednesday: He’s opened for the Rolling Stones, played alongside his idols B.B. King, Clarence Brown and the Muddy Waters Band, and has appeared on several late night shows, including “The Tonight Show” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” Kenny Wayne Shepherd is a young blues musician from Louisiana, and he’ll bring his unique guitar sound to the Val Air Ballroom for a night of blues rock. Max Wellman's Home for the Holidays show
Thursday through Sunday: Local jazz favorite Max Wellman returns to Des Moines from Atlanta this weekend for a special holiday performance at the Temple for Performing Arts. Wellman and the rest of his band will perform their annual Home for the Holidays concert, featuring their versions of holiday favorites. 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday. $20-$49. Tonic Sol-Fa
Friday and Saturday: Tonic Sol-Fa, an all-male a cappella group from the Minneapolis area, returns to Hoyt Sherman for its annual holiday show. The quartet has been voted into the Midwest Music Hall of Fame, and averages more than 150 shows annually across the country. 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $22-$32. Winter Farmers Market
Friday and Saturday: The absence of warm weather doesn’t mean you have to put your local produce shopping on hold. Shop the Winter Farmers Market this weekend for locally raised products, including eggs, beef, pork, turkeys, holiday hams and winter produce. There is also an abundance of local honey, jams, salsa, wine, cheese and more, perfect for gift-giving. Utopia: The Iowa Musical Revue
Thursday through Dec. 31: “Utopia: The Iowa Musical Revue” celebrates and pokes a little fun at the people, places and traditions of Iowa. The show premiered last year, and this year features 16 independent songs and sketches, including five new segments written for this new production. 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and Tuesday; 2 p.m. Sunday. $22.50-$30.50.
