Here are my top five event picks of the week:

'Bring it On: The Musical'

Through Sunday: The newest cast to take the stage at the Civic Center has spirit — yes they do! — and pom poms, short skirts and the attitude to match in “Bring it On: The Musical.” The world of competitive cheerleading heats up the stage as two cheer squads battle for a national high school title, but when cheer captain Torrance Shipman is accused of stealing a routine, she and her squad must go to great lengths to create an original performance. 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday. $25-$68. Des Moines Civic Center, 221 Walnut St. Go to civiccenter.org.

Punk at The Gas Lamp

Wednesday: Punk/new wave icons Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), Hugh Cornwell (The Stranglers) and Clem Burke (Blondie) will perform for a uniquely awesome show at The Gas Lamp. North of Grand will open. 8 p.m. $15 at the door. The Gas Lamp, 1501 Grand Ave. Go to gaslampdsm.com.

Iowa Creativity Summit

Thursday: Join best-selling author and speaker Matthew E. May during the first Iowa Creativity Summit, an evening workshop for creative thinkers and doers. May will lead two 90-minuite workshops inspired by his experience with Stanford University’s “D-School,” which will train thinkers of all backgrounds to embrace and learn creative processes. 5:15-9:45 p.m. Dinner, dessert, a custom notebook and a name badge are included with the registration. $50. Olmsted Center at Drake University, 2507 University Ave. Go to iowacreativitysummit.com.

Startup Weekend

Friday through Sunday: Startup Weekend is “an intense 54-hour event” focused on building a Web or mobile application that also brings together people of different skill sets — primarily software developers, graphic designers and business folk — to build the apps and develop a commercial case around them. Dinner will kick off the evening on Friday, followed by speakers (Geoff Wood of Silicon Prairie News and Emma Peterson of Tikly are among them). Then participants will pitch their business idea in 60 seconds, the group will vote and divide into teams, and then the creative process begins. The work continues all day Saturday, with final presentation on Sunday and an awards ceremony. Organizers are planning for 50-100 people, or as they call them, “entrepreneurial-minded individuals with a ridiculously diverse set of skills, all with the goal of getting shit done.” 5:30 p.m.-1 a.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-midnight Saturday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday. $75. Bank of America Building, 317 Sixth Ave. Go to dsm.startupweekend.org.

Drag King show

Saturday: You’ve probably seen men perform as women during a drag show, but how about women performing as men? The second annual Drag King show will feature a different kind of drag show, with models, painted bodies from Body by Svec and local artwork. A dance party will follow the event, DJ’d by Mike Utley. 8 p.m.-2 a.m. $10 general admission, $20 for VIP admission, which includes a close viewing area, private servers and a “cutting card” that will get you drinks faster than anyone else. Des Moines Social Club, 400 Walnut St. Go to the Drag King 2 Facebook page for more info.
