Here are my top picks for events this week. Enjoy!
Wednesday: Zoo Brew, your answer to a mid-week craving for a few cold ones paired with live music, kicks off its summer season this week with an “Uncorked” wine theme. The event, staged 5:30-8 p.m. Wednesday evenings June through August, features live, local bands and libations all within the friendly confines of the Blank Park Zoo. This week, Bonne Finken and Ryne Doughty will perform, with wine sampling from Covered Bridges Winery, John Ernest Vineyard and Winery, Madison County Winery, Prairie Moon Vineyard and Winery, and Tabor Home Winery. Not in the mood for wine? A selection of beer and margaritas will also be available for $4-$5. Zoo Brew is included with regular zoo admission ($11). Zoo members get in free. Thursday: Christopher the Conquered, which took home the top honor as Des Moines’ Buzz Band in our annual Mixies Music Awards this year, will perform at The Gas Lamp with Seedlings, Howard D. Friday: Classic rock band Styx will perform at Prairie Meadows this weekend. The Chicago group, which has experienced several break-ups and make-ups since its start in the late ’70s, will play dozens of their classic hits, including “Fooling Yourself,” “Too Much Time on My Hands” and “Mr. Roboto.” 8 p.m. Tickets are $30-$68 at ticketmaster.com. Friday: The highlight of Winefest for the young professional crowd (although not limited to YPs only), Sips and the City is the perfect after-work escape for wine, food and music. Hundreds of wines will be available for sipping, with even more food for patrons this year. Enjoy the event in sunny Nollen Plaza, with live music and hors d’oeuvres from local restaurants, as well as inside Capital Square. Tickets are $40 in advance or $50 at the door. Upgrade to the VIP lounge for $25 more to be treated to high-end wines and exclusive food. Saturday: The Grand Tasting, the final, more formal event of the weekend. Taste wines from around the world and gourmet foods, all in an elegant atmosphere at Nollen Plaza and inside Capital Square. Cocktail attire. Tickets are $75. Friday through Monday: Capital City Pride will host its annual PrideFest this weekend. The event, which promotes acceptance, tolerance and understanding of the LGBT community, kicks off with a scavenger hunt downtown, starting at 6 p.m. Friday at The Blazing Saddle, 416 E. Fifth St. Gates open for the PrideFest Street Party at 5 p.m. Saturday, which features Pride Idol, Mark Ortega and Beverly McClellan. Sunday events begin with a pancake breakfast at 8:30 a.m., the parade at 1 p.m. and the Pride Stage opens at 2:30 p.m. Round out the weekend with Pride Day at Adventureland on Monday. Wristbands are $10 for entry into Saturday and Sunday events. Children 12 and under are free with a paid adult. All events are in the East Village. Go to capitalcitypride.org.
