sasayra commented on 4. Cheeseburger at B-Bop’s
What dmdoug said. B-Bops is a distant second to In-N-Out burger. The only similarity is the greasy bun.
BigLug commented on 5. Maid-Rite Sandwich
If you don't mind waiting 12 minutes at the drive thru, it's an average chicken sandwich... The loose meat sandwich is a bit over-rated.
MeowMeow wrote about Chef's Kitchen
The place was packed when we got there so we thought we were in for a good meal. Boy, were we wrong. We had the fried pickles as an appetizer. The slices were so thin and small in diameter that you really could only taste the fried flour coating. The ranch dressing they came with was watered down. One of us ordered the teriyakii salad and the other, the prime rib sandwich. The salad had waaay too much teriyaki sauce and I knew immediately that the noodles were straight from the Lipton Teriyaki noodle packages you can get at the grocery store. The rest of the salad was OK, but the "good" veggies (tomatoes, olives, etc.) were few and in tiny pieces. The prime rib sandwich was cold and flavorless. We spotted some black mold on the lettuce garnish. It was quite possibly the worse prime rib ever encountered. Oh, and the famous cookie jar with free chocolate chip cookies? Empty. There didn't even seem to be an effort to make more and refill it--even though the night was young and the place was packed. Perhaps the poor quality was due to the chef (or was it the owner?) who was busy drinking at the bar instead of watching the kitchen. The best part of the dinner? The water.
KristinM wrote about The Great Plains Sauce & Dough Co.
Great Plains is the best pizza I have EVER had. The mountains of cheese just oozed from the thick wheat crust once again. This pizza never fails to live up to our expectations. They remodeled and now have a mezzanine upstairs for more seating that is really cool to sit up there. You can tell by the quality this is not a chain store.
dmdoug commented on 4. Cheeseburger at B-Bop’s
Did you seriously suggest that B-Bops is almost as good as In-N-Out? What a joke! If B-Bops were remotely close I would eat there every day instead of only a dozen times in a dozen years. On the other hand whenever we are in California the first place we stop is In-N-Out, even before seeing family. The only comparison you could possibly make is the drive through.

I had the pleasure of eating here today after not having been for a long time! I ordered the gryo and had high hopes. Thankfully-it lived up to all my expectations! The lamb, pita, veggies and sauce were perfect. It was served with a side if fries, that were more like potato wedges. We had fast and friendly service. I'm excited to go back and try the other things on the interesting menu!
jmb wrote about When Pigs Fly
All my friends agree that When Pigs Fly has the best ribs in Des Moines. REcnetly on the Monday all you can eat rib night, five of us ate at least a rack apiece.

I completely agree! I only have these about once a year, but there is something so amazingly good about a McDonalds fish sandwich!

amandalynn0220 wrote about Brick House Cafe
The Brick House is a great choice for homestyle food. Where else can you get a piece of jello cake with your meal? The lunch specials are always great (but heavy; you'll want a nap afterwards) and they have all the traditional breakfast options. Definitely worth a try.
amandalynn0220 wrote about Quiznos Subs
Poorly made sandwiches, less than stellar service. Seems unclean. Not a good choice for a quick sandwich in the Johnston area. Go with subway or Casey's sub counter.
amandalynn0220 wrote about Trostel's Greenbriar Restaurant & Bar
I love Greenbriar; these bad reviews don't make any sense to me. I've dined there somewhere between five and ten times in the past couple years and my meal/service is always great. I definitely recommend giving it a try.
amandalynn0220 wrote about Bandit Burrito
This is the best burrito place in the DM area. Every combination is great and the staff is informative and fast. I go there once a week; never a sub-par experience.
amandalynn0220 wrote about China Cafe
China Cafe is wonderful! The service is always perfect and the food is great. The best chinese restaurant in the Johnston area, for sure.
MegF wrote about Zimm's Food and Spirits
I love Zimms. One of my favorite parts about the bar is the fact that it has two, large and different seating areas. The first area is usually a bit laid back, with people eating and often watching a game. The back bar is generally where the music is loader and people are getting a bit rowdier at night! They have a 2 juke boxes (one in front and one in back), silver strike, buck hunter and my favorite-the shuffle board table. You can always get a drink, whether it be from one of the two huge bars or a waitress. They also have pretty good food. I recommend their chicken fingers and honey mustard. Its a really great place in the summer because they have a spacious deck. Adding more room to the already huge, yet somehow cozy bar.
UncleMike wrote about Smashburger
We tried Smashburger in West Des Moines, and we liked it well enough to try it once. We were disappointed. After all the hype, we expected something special. We got cheeseburgers that was no better than drive thru fast food burgers, but a lot more expensive. Our salads were fresh and crisp, but were very small, and the onion rings were greasy. I don't think we'll need to go back.
UncleMike wrote about Maxie's Restaurant
We've always loved Maxie's for lunch or dinner. The sandwiches are great and the service and atmosphere are top notch. The steaks, chops and other dishes are all great. We've never had a bad meal or a reason to complain. Can't say that about very many restaurants.
UncleMike wrote about Woody's Smoke Shack
We tried sandwiches from Woody's. Very small and pretty much tasteless. There are at least half a dozen barbecue places in Des Moines with much better values. We didn't try the sides, but if the barbecue is disappointing, I wouldn't hold out much hope for the other dishes.

pan fried?
TooLoud commented on First look: The Q Barbecue Restaurant & Bar
My wife and I went in for dinner. Very good BBQ, the chicken was especially well done, the sweet potato fries won me over, even though I am not a fan of sweet potatoes. With 4 kinds of BBQ sauce to use if you so choose there is sure to be one for every taste. I wished there had been a little more brisket in my order. That said there was a lot of food, and no room for dessert. My wife said it was one of the better Bloody Mary's shes had. The prices were reasonable, tax and tip included $35 for two. I can see us going back to try the ribs and pulled pork. 3.5/5
