Poor Kathie Lee.

In her usual chatty way, Today co-host Kathie Lee Gifford was going on and on during an interview this morning with Martin Short, asking him about his kids and then commenting on the fact that he and his wife "have one of the greatest marriages in show business."

"How many years are you in love with her now?" she asked.

Short gulped and quietly replied, "Married 36 years."

"But you're still in love!?" said Gifford.

"Madly in love," he said, and Gifford kept at it.

The problem is that Short's wife, Nancy Dolman, died two years ago of ovarian cancer.

The interview was rolling along so well that Short must have thought he shouldn't mention it.

After the show, Gifford tweeted a shout-out to Short.

"I send my sincerest apologies to Martin Short and his family," she wrote. "He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I'm so grateful."
