Joe Pesci as Tommy DeVito, “Goodfellas”
Credit:Warner Bros./The Kobal Collection
Tommy is a crackling live wire, operating on the explosive end of the gangster spectrum. Pesci plays him as an exposed raw nerve, all emotion, insecurity and violence. He kicks a man to death, flies off the hook when he feels like he’s been insulted, and keeps begging to be promoted as a “made” man, even as it becomes obvious that he’s irking the guys in charge. He thinks he’s living the good life, basking in the freedom made possible by a life of crime. But he’s really making himself a liability, a loose cannon who draws too much attention to himself and his work.
