With “Secretariat” racing into theaters on Oct. 8 to remind us all about the legendary underdog of the title—he was horse racing’s last Triple Crown winner—it seems like the time is right to take stock of cinema’s other great sports underdogs.
From boxing to baseball, hockey to horse racing, filmmakers and audiences alike can’t resist the thrill of watching unlikely champions do their stuff. While a complete list would include just about every sports movie ever made, we’ve tried to narrow it down to the most fun and inspiring underdogs.
A warning for the spoiler-phobic: we do reveal what happens to each of our iconic underdogs.
