"Exorcist: The Beginning" (2004) / "Dominion: A Prequel to the Exorcist" (2005)
Of course Hollywood couldn’t leave the “Exorcist” franchise untouched for too long. In 2002, Paul Schrader (“American Gigolo”) started production on an “Exorcist” prequel about Max von Sydow’s character from the original film, Father Merrin, originally encountering the demon Pazuzu in Africa. However, Warner Bros. wasn’t happy with what Schrader delivered and hired Renny Harlin (“Die Hard 2”) to rework Schrader’s cut and shoot some new sequences of his own. Harlin’s film, “Exorcist: The Beginning” [pictured] was released to mixed results in 2004. The studio then decided to release Schrader’s original cut in an extremely limited release the following year.
