Behind the scenes of one of the year's coolest movies
By Geoff Berkshire, Metromix
“Drive” is not your typical Hollywood action thriller.
The heavily stylized American debut of breakout Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn stars Ryan Gosling as a character known only as Driver—fitting for a man more in tune with cars than people. Until, that is, Driver’s encounters with his neighbor, Irene (Carey Mulligan), and her young son develop into an intense emotional bond complicated by the fact that Irene’s husband (Oscar Isaac) will soon be released from prison.
Complicated doesn’t even begin to describe what happens from there, but the mix of characters involved includes Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman as Los Angeles gangsters, Christina Hendricks as an enigmatic bombshell and Bryan Cranston as Driver’s friend and boss.
We talked to Gosling, Mulligan, Perlman and Refn about what audiences can expect from the wild ride that is “Drive.”
