C-3PO and R2-D2, “Star Wars” (1977)
Robots as: Cheerful comrades
They could have starred in their own buddy comedy: The nerdy, up-tight C-3PO and the childish, bleeping R2-D2. Instead they’re matched with the likes of Han Solo and Luke Skywalker for a few whirlwind galactic adventures. It was R2-D2 who helped Luke destroy the Death Star, it was C-3PO who warned Han Solo of betrayal in the Cloud City, and they were the ageless, timeless links that connected the original trilogy of the 1970s with the prequels of the new century. They may have been made of titanium, but their loyalty sure seemed to suggest a couple hearts beating beneath the surface.
