Tuned out
The ballyhooed return of original song performances landed with a thud thanks to four less-than-thrilling nominees performed in four less-than-thrilling production numbers. Randy Newman made his way through a forgettable "Toy Story" song before Mandy Moore and "Chuck" star Zachary Levi proved their love song from "Tangled" wasn't meant to accompany anything live action.
Later, Florence Welch couldn't do much to enliven AR Rahman's spare, simple "127 Hours" anthem and Gwyneth Paltrow showed us why "Country Strong" wasn't much of a sensation at the box office or on the Billboard charts. This was probably when voters decided they should've nominated Cher's showstopping number from "Burlesque" after all.
