Rachel Gulick, 25, is a singer/guitarist for Vaj of Courage, performing at 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Vaudeville Mews, 212 Fourth St.
Q: How did Vaj of Courage get together?
Crystal (Fields) and I started talking about doing an all-female group back in 2008 when we were first getting together with Cleo’s Apartment. This last year we met Emily (Nelson) and played a few shows with the three of us. Emily went to Hawaii so we had Jen (Wiater) from Omega Dog be a guest performer. That went so well that we figured, why don’t we add another lady?
Q: The group is working on an album now?
We’re currently working on “The Red Vaj of Courage.” We recorded our Bitch concert last fall and are thinking about calling that “There Will Be Blood” or “It’s About Bloody Time.”
Q: The band’s bio says you’re trying to get audiences to “rethink what an ‘all lady band’ is all about.” What stereotypes are you trying to fight?
It feels like in the past all-female groups have been marginalized as men-hating, lesbian feminazis singing folk songs. We really want to play with the idea. We are raunchy at times and violate all sorts of social norms. I think that’s where the real work of Vaj is done.
