Lamb of God is the headlining act at Friday's show at the Val Air Ballroom, but wait, who's that opening for them?
Holy crap. GWAR! That's right - the theatrical shock rock metal group is coming to spread violence, madness and legs in our fair city. Here's a brief Gwardication if you're not familiar with the act.
The band: Most band's stories about how they got together are boring, but GWAR's is awesome, though a bit (OK, entirely) fictional. A group of chaos warriors known as the Scumdogs of the Universe grew too powerful and were banished to the earth. They slept here for millions of years until our pollution awoke them, and now they walk the earth looking to wipe us of it and rock out as much as possible. They claim to have created the human race by getting freaky with the local animal population.
The band's current touring lineup is Oderus Urungus (vocalist), Balsac The Jaws of Death (guitar), Flattus Maximus (guitar), Jizmak Da Gusha (drums) and Beefcake The Mighty (bass).
Past members of the group include Slymenstra Hymen, Nippleus Erectus, Joey and Johnny Slutman and Stephen Sphincter.
The show: GWAR's stage show is the band's true appeal. The band members all wear elaborate costumes to complete the group's demonic warrior look. The band, stage and audience regularly end up covered in gallons of fake blood and other fluids. It's sort of like a Gallagher performance, but not painful to sit through. GWAR's army of slaves regularly do battle on stage with impersonators of presidents, popes and celebrities. Sometimes GWAR brings audience members up on stage to be eaten by a monster or fed through a meat grinder. It's horrific, juvenile and disgusting. But in a good way.
You may have seen them: The band has appeared on "The Jerry Springer Show," "Viva La Bam," and were favorites of Beavis & Butthead, so you know you're in for a night of high-brow entertainment. They also made an appearance in "Empire Records," where their monster ate one of the film's stars in a drug hallucination.
