Chris Backstrom, 28, is the vocalist/guitarist for jam band Best of Fools, performing at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the House of Bricks, 525 E. Grand Ave.
Q: Best of Fools started out as a two piece under the name Tall Boys. How did the group end up expanding to a six piece?
That was the plan from the get go, I guess. I grew up with a lot of different musicians in Norwalk and started jamming with those guys. People have come and gone and we keep adding more members. I just love the sound of all the different instruments coming together. I think once we have a violin the band will be set. We’ll damn near be an orchestra at that point.
Q: As Best of Fools has expanded, it’s worked in more original material. What prompted that?
We’re pretty much all original at this point, depending on how long a venue wants us to perform. It’s definitely the direction we’re headed. I was always writing originals. It’s been the plan ever since I started playing piano and guitar.
Q: Your show is the day after the world could end. Have you been doing anything special, just in case it does?
I wouldn’t say we’re doing anything just in case. But me and the other guys in the band are big on ancient alien theory, so it’s fun to have a gig lined up celebrating when something doesn’t happen.
