Bands that won't be playing 80/35 in 2013
The announcement of the Bonaroo lineup yesterday made me start looking at other summer festivals to try to get a feel for who might and might not be playing 80/35 when it sets up in Western Gateway Park July 6-7. So far, I have a big list of bands who won't be playing.
As in past years, Europe is a big vacuum, sucking up tons of bands to play summer festivals there. Here are some of the bands who will be on the other side of the world:
The Open'er Festival (July 3-6 in Poland) has: Blur, Queens of the Stone Age, Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys, Animal Collective, Tame Impala and Modest Mouse. Basically, if a band has a connection to royalty or animals, they'll be in Poland.
Roskilde (June 29-July 7 in Denmark) has: Angel Haze, Dillinger Escape Plan, Sigur Ros, Rihanna, Slipknot (I'm not saying all these bands were even possibilities).
Pohoda (July 11-13 in Slovakia) is a few days after 80/35, but if these bands are in Europe the week after 80/35, odds are they won't be in Iowa the week of: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Smashing Pumpkins, Kaiser Chiefs, Justice, Bloc Party, Django Django, Atoms for Peace, Buena Vista Social Club.
Rock for People (July 2-5 in Czech Republic): Klaxons, Papa Roach (but you can see them at Lazerfest).
Rock Werchter (July 4-7 in Belgium): Green Day, Lumineers, Biffy Clyro, Volbeat (but they are at Lazerfest).
And here are a few more that seem unlikely due to European tours: Mumford & Sons, The Killers, Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Kendrick Lamar, Imagine Dragons.
I also have it on good authority that The Shins won't be there.
So who could be playing? You're going to have to wait a week or so to find out (when I'll blog about possibilities). The DMMC will announce the first round of bands in early April.
