Gems on Army Post

It's your last stop for dining before you hit Indianola, and one of the busier roads in Des Moines. Army Post Road has a few new dining spots opening in the next few months, but here are a few classic and delicious spots worth the drive south.

Gems on Army Post
The Tavern in Des Moines is a local pizza institution.

Tavern South

Find it: 1106 S.W. Army Post Road.

It’s not true south side dining if there isn’t some Italian sausage involved. You can get an Italian grinder pizza at The Tavern, but the Grinder Sting ($19.75 for a large) adds a bit of spice with jalapeno peppers and hot pepper cheese on the restaurant’s classic thin crust.

Pomodoro’s Italian Grille

Find it: 111 Army Post Road.

This new Italian restaurant recently opened on the south side. It has an extensive menu, including pork chop marsala ($14.99), an Iowa chop sauteed with mushrooms and prosciutto in a marsala wine sauce, served with potatoes and veggies.

La Hacienda

Find it: 900 E. Army Post Road.

This colorful Mexican restaurant has probably the best patio on Army Post. Try an order of Hawaiian pork tacos ($8.99), two flour tortillas filled with marinated pork, sweet sliced onions and chunks of pineapple with a side of rice and beans.

Smitty’s Tenderloin Shop

Find it: 1401 Army Post Road.

Smitty’s doesn’t seem like it has changed much in 60 years. There are non-tenderloin options, but what’s the point of ordering anything other than a king tenderloin ($7.25), which is so huge that it gives you 300 percent of your recommended daily allowance of pork?
