In March, Angelo’s Pizza opened a second location on East 14th Street in the former KC BBQ building. The restaurant offers the same pizza, sandwiches and salads as the restaurant’s 1310 Grand Ave. location in West Des Moines, with the addition of Cincinnati chili.
Angelo’s is a restaurant/takeout hybrid. You order at the counter, with the menu posted on a sign behind the cash register. During lunch you can get pizza by the slice.
The restaurant has brightly painted walls, with various autographed sports photos and jerseys hanging on them. There were few open tables when we stopped in on a Friday night. We placed an order for onion rings and a 14-inch pepperoni pizza.
I’m so used to restaurants in Des Moines serving onion string-style onion rings that I was surprised to get a basket of thick, full circles. And judging by the various (small) imperfections in rings, they’re handmade, not frozen. For $6.99 it’s quite a large serving and very tasty.
Our pizza came out as a pepperoni and Graziano sausage pizza, which I was fine with. It turns out our order was switched with a family two tables down from us. They had already started ours, so we just agreed we were both happy with what we received. If they had ordered anchovies and sauerkraut I might not have been so happy.
The pizza was big enough that even with the two of us, there were leftovers.
The south side has a number of great pizza places, so it’s nice to see pizza creeping north a bit (even if it’s by way of the west side). Angelo’s feels like a pizza parlor that’s been around for a lot longer than a month, and is a nice addition.
