The kings of wings

We know it’s football season, and you’re passionate about those greasy, spicy and slightly orange appetizers, so we asked about your favorite spots to get hot wings in Des Moines.

Readers love:

Gerri's Tavern, 232 E. 30th St.

"The wings are so incredibly addictive, I can't even put it in to words how good they are. Gerri's offers their special which is 5 pounds of wings and a pitcher of beer for $25. You just cannot go wrong with a group of people and a couple of specials. The wings and beer just flow so perfect together. To sum it up, Gerri's is definitely the spot to get the best hot wings in the Des Moines area." -Metromixer TB7

Chicken Coop Sports Bar & Grill, 1960 Grand Ave., West Des Moines

"I got acquainted with the Chicken Coop after winning Lazer's Kickback. Chicken Coop provided some great wings, baked beans, and other sides. I'd have to say that Jamaica Jerk flavor is my favorite." -Metromixer AngieF1974

Jethro's, 3102 Forest Ave.

"Wings have an awesome smoked flavor and they offer a number of great sauces, not to mention a great atmosphere with all their flat panel high def TVs." -Eric Larson, 32 (He also recommends the Chicken Coop, Buffalo Wild Wings, Hooters and Third Base).

All in the Family, 4413 Fleur Drive

"I was at All In The Family on Fleur Drive the other night. I had their hot wings. They were great!" -Bob Santi, 32

Daytona's All Sports Cafe, 4875 Merle Hay Road

"Jalapeno Hot Cap - need I say more?" -Mekala Sorenson, 28 (Sorenson also recommends the Longest Yard).

Metromix asked readers: Desmoines.metromix.com asked readers to make playlists of their favorite places to get hot wings in the metro. Here are two:

Playlist: Best wings in town, by Metromixer cambodianhooker

1. Court Avenue Restaurant and Brewery, 309 Court Ave.

They may not be the hottest, or they may not give the biggest portion, but pound for pound these wings are the best in the metro. The sauce is unbelievably good.

- Buffalo Wild Wings, 6925 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines

It's the quantity of sauces that makes this place. They have mild like garlic Parmesan and teriyaki, and they have exotic like Caribbean Jerk and Mango Habanero. Right now, they have a special limited time sauce called Southwest Chipotle.

- Mug's Pub & Grub, 165 S. Jordan Creek Parkway, Suite 120, West Des Moines

I know Mug's has multiple flavors but I have only had the hottest one. It has little chunks of jalapeno in the sauce, which is different. They are sloppy but really tender.

- Welch Avenue Station, 207 Welch Ave., Ames

These wings are called inferno wings, and unlike traditional wings they are sauceless. These things are deadly hot, and combine them with a side cup of the "hotter than hot" sauce and you will have a date with the devil.

Playlist: Best hot wings in the metro, by Metromixer Producer Kurt

- Gerri's Tavern, 232 E. 30th St.

Easily the best wings in all of Des Moines. Order 5 pounds and enjoy. They only come in one flavor, but it's the best flavor imaginable.

- Chicken Coop Sports Bar & Grill, 1960 Grand Ave., West Des Moines

The meat is well cooked, but the flavors somewhat disappointed. The hot was tasty ... the bucknasty wasn't as hot as advertised. The spicy garlic dijon wings tasted like a cross between wings and hot dogs, not always a bad thing though.

- Buffalo Wild Wings, 6925 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines

The old standby. The place you want to go for different flavors. The Garlic Parmesan and Spicy Garlic won for top honors. Fear not the blazin' wings, for they are not that hot.

- Jethro's, 3102 Forest Ave.

Great sized wings! The Carolina are sweet and spicy, the garlic Parmesan came drenched, the "Jethros" were a sweet barbecue, but the hot disappointed with non-hotness.
