I live near Hull Avenue, and I’ve seen a few businesses come and go at 910 Hull Ave. Most recently it was First Stop Pizza, which closed about a year ago. Last month, the space was taken over by Cafe Ebenezer’s, a restaurant and bar that seems like it might have more staying power.
The business is owned Kathy Stanford, who also owns the nearby East 14th Street Tavern. The inside of Cafe Ebenezer’s is redone with a T-shaped layout and a lot of open space. About a half-dozen flat-screens are located around the restaurant, showing a steady stream of sports.
Despite the bar aspect, Cafe Ebenezer’s is pushing itself as family-friendly. There is a large food menu with tacos, pizzas, Italian sandwiches, burgers and more. There’s a surprising assortment of breads and cheeses available.
I ordered a pork tenderloin with a side of onion rings. I was disappointed with my order, but not because the sandwich was bad. It was good, but not spectacular. I was disappointed because I didn’t order the grilled peanut butter and bacon sandwich. I don’t know why I didn’t, but I’m still kicking myself over it days later. It’s the kind of thing that’s hard to justify ordering on a normal trip out, but I could have here.
My wife’s meatball sandwich was pretty incredible, with a well-cut bun that kept errant meatballs from rolling out onto the plate. The meatballs were flavorful, with some size but not so big that they were awkward to eat. All sandwiches come with chips, but onion rings, sweet potato fries, waffle fries or crinkle-cut fries are available for an extra $1.95.
Cafe Ebenezer’s isn’t big or flashy, but hopefully it will become a long-term Hull Avenue business. The food menu sets it apart from the nearby Hull Avenue Tavern, and the owner’s experience in the area gives me hope that 910 Hull Ave. has found a permanent tenant.
