Two for $20: Maddy's Again
The chili cheeseburger special with a side of onion rings at Maddy's Again in West Des Moines.

Before Catoor’s on Grand, 1306 Grand Ave., West Des Moines was home to Maddy’s Place for many years. Owner Brian Maddy relocated the bar to the West Glen area a few years back, dubbing it Maddy’s Again and beefed up the restaurant side of things.

We stopped in for lunch on a Friday, and were invited to take our choice of the available tables and booths. The place has a bar feel, but with a few arcade and prize games to keep things friendly for kids during lunch and dinner.

The menu at Maddy’s Again has the usual sports bar fare of nachos, mozzarella sticks, burgers and sandwiches, with a few surprises. Like pan-seared basa in mango salsa, coconut breaded jumbo shrimp and the unique funnel cake fries (which they were sadly out of when we visited).

For my lunch I ordered the special, a chili cheese burger, served with onion rings. The chili was clearly homemade, and made for a delicious, if messy, burger. The onion rings were thick and crispy, and at $9 the plate seemed like a good value.

My co-worker ordered the Build Your Own Dog option, a quarter pound, all-beef hot dog that he got topped with shredded cheese and sauteed onions (chili, relish, and other toppers are available) and served with a side of homemade potato chips. He said the hot dog was tasty, but after lunch was slightly regretful that hot dogs aren’t the most filling meal. Especially compared to a hefty chili cheese burger.

Maddy’s Again has some familiar options, along with a few surprises worth exploring. For a cheap lunch or some food to chow down on during a game, it has the bases covered.
