Rice Bowl: User Reviews
Rice Bowl
2607 Beaver Ave. - Des Moines515-255-0165
Expecting something else after seeing the presentable brick face of the building, we entered into, what seemed like a diner frozen in time. The menu appeared to be written in a hurry, and continued the theme of outdated color schemes and a lack of visually stimulating decor. Wafting in an uncomfortable vibe from the music and lack of competing noise, we knew immediately that we were sampling this venue from the comfort of-anywhere else. There was nothing unusual about how long it took our order, it's traditional Chinese food, which for the most part, is on the speedier end of the ethnic dish prep scale. Ordering Ham Fried Rice (a relatively generic entree), I noticed a high amount of chutes and sprouts, and was incredibly disappointed with portion size. Its flavor was subtle as expected, but offered nothing to distinguish itself from other restaurant's versions. I wouldn't call it a rip off, just a let down.

I love Chinese food, and especially love Beaverdale. I really try to support the businesses there, so trying this out was a no-brainer. I hate saying anything negative about a locally owned business but I was really disappointed by the Rice Bowl. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken. The chicken was so fried, that I could really only taste the very crunchy breading instead of any chicken. The crunchy breading pieces were drowned in the sweet and sour sauce, making for a saucy fried mess. Perhaps it was just a bad night, and I am willing to give it another chance and try something different next time.

I liked the RB. The food was good and the service relatively fast. The RB set up looks like an old Coney Island with the orange benches. If you don't care about the outdated atmosphere, the food is good.
