Centro: User Reviews
First of all centro is one of my favorite restaurants in town! And after eating there dozens of times I had my first problem and it was with the pasta, my sister even said how can the pasta be bad at a Italian restaurant? It was floating in water and had No flavor and the rgatoni was unrecognizable and all broke apart.
As usual everything else was FAB... The scallops were huge and succulent, Centro salad and pizza was great as always as was the rest of the food!
Service was very Good and our server compt our deserts.
George Gets IT !!! I wish more restaurateurs Did !!! Also had a fabulous experience at Django a few wees ago.

You dont hear so many good things about this place for nothing. Centro is my go-to place when I want a nice dinner for a decent price. Its an especially great place to entertain out of town guests or family. I love that its locally owned an Italian food-something that Des Moines does great, therefore it seems like the perfect restaurant to represent the city.
Unfortunately, Ive had a few bad experiences with the pizza-which I still actually love. A few times we got a pizza with soggy crust. I havent had anything like that in a while and was told that it was a problem with the oven temperature. Also, they have a great wine list!

Centro is usually the place we take visiting guests in our home to get a "Des Moines" experience. This place is amazing, from their menu to their location. I love their newly expanded menu that includes burgers, which is great for lunch!

I had never had a bad experience at Centro before a couple Sundays ago at brunch. I ordered a pretty standard breakfast. I asked for my eggs over-easy and they came over-hard. The bacon was flimsy, greasy and filled with sadness. I expected the thick crunchy bacon that has the consistency of beef jerky. I chose breakfast potatoes over fresh fruit and regretted that. The potatoes were so over-seasoned they were barely edible. My dining partner had the Billy Burger, which looked delish. He asked for an over-easy egg on it and that egg, too, was over-hard. Very disappointing, but I'm chalking it up to a fluke.

I love to visit Centro's for a special celebration. We recently went for a friends birthday and it was a blast. They do a wonderful job making things special for a group. On the flip side-I really enjoy sitting in the bar and ordering a few cocktails and appetizers. Their pizzas are authentic and worth the trip to Centro. The atmosphere is chic and modern-like many upscale Italian restaurants. One of my favorite things about Centro is the fact that you can treat someone to an expensive dinner, grab a drink before a show or have a lunch meeting. Centro is versatile in the crowd and occasion it can attract, and a place you can pretty much always count on.

Depending on what you order, you could have a fantastic night at Centro, or just an average night. I think that Centro is one of the few places that you can be just as happy eating a pizza at the bar or sitting down to a meal in the general seating area. One of my favorite things to do is order a pizza and have a cocktail with a friend or two in the bar area. Service is more often than not quite good, but every once in a while a server is just completely off his or her game. Prices are fair, although nothing I would consider a "steal". All in all, a great choice for any occasion.

The tomato caprese salad was good but very small. Two slices of tomato, and 2 half slices of cherry tomatos with two small slices of fresh mozzarella. The entree was a seafood mancotti dish supposed to feature shrimp, crab, halibut in an alfredo sauce. The pasta was tough...had to saw through it with table knife and then was very chewy. I ended up eating the stuffing separately and then appreciated the fact that there was lots of ricotta cheese but very little seafood! When the waiter asked how everything was and I told him the pasta seemed undercooked, tough, and chewy he said he would tell the chef. When the waiter came back his comment regarding my complaints to the chef was, "He didn't have much to say." End of story on that I guess. The dessert was a lemon custard with blueberry compote which was quite tasty and refreshing.
I expected more quality from Centro and certainly more of a response to a legitimate complaint. I was eyeing the pizzas that several other diners were eating and wished I had ignored the Restaurant Week special.

I've been a regular at Centro since it's opened and never bad food, crummy ambiance, poor service or felt I wasn't getting what I paid for. From the pizza to the pasta and desserts, this place is one of Des Moines' best.

Centro is far and away my favorite restaurant in Des Moines. Everything from the atmospehere to the food is unattainable at any other restaurant in the Des Moines area. My favorite dish is the Zuppa Di Pesce however i have never been dissapointed. The attached South Union Bread Company is one of my favorite lunch spots.
