Great Plains is the best pizza I have EVER had. The mountains of cheese just oozed from the thick wheat crust once again. This pizza never fails to live up to our expectations. They remodeled and now have a mezzanine upstairs for more seating that is really cool to sit up there. You can tell by the quality this is not a chain store.

I pretty much grew up on Great Plains, even though I spend most of my childhood living in my home state of Minnesota. My parents were both ISU graduates and from Iowa. Whenever we would venture down to Des Moines to see my grandparents, we always had to stop in Ames for Great Plains Pizza. Now, as a Des Moines resident and ISU Grad myself, I still love Great Plains every bit as much as my parents thought I should.
You can honestly become full from one or maybe two of these slices. The crust and cheese are ridiculous. I love the wheat crust that is served with bottles of honey-perfect combination!

This pizza doesnt mess around and the slices are extremely filling. The extreme layer of cheese is something that sets their pizza apart from the the rest in Ames. I have to say its some of the best pizza I have ever had! They have six different pizza types; the Denver ( rolled edge wheat crust), Sams Recipe thin white crust), New Orleans style (rolled edge white crust), Oat Style (thick with whole grain oats), Thin Denver (just as the name indicates) and the Idaho Style (thin, soft crust made with potato flour). My personal favorite is the Denver, in fact I really havent tried many of the others because I love this one so much. They have bottles of honey on the table to add to your crust-it goes especially well with the thick wheat crust-so delicious! If your a pizza lover, you MUST try Great Plains Sauce & Dough!

Here's my experience with Great Plains. I lived in Ames and ordered a pizza to be delivered as we liked the product. Pizza arrives, we pay, wrong pizza. Call them and they tell us they will get it right out but we had to give back the pizza untouched. Pizza arrives, we give them pizza. Wrong pizza again. Keep in mind...these aren't even close to being right. We call again. Same scene. Pizza arrives and on the third try we get ours and a coupon for a free pizza next time we go in. Great, I'm thinking. A few weeks later we go to Great Plains and order pizza using the coupon. Pizza arrives and we start to eat. My daughter gets a horrified look on her face as she pulls a long hair out of the cheese. I go up to the counter to complain and the manager's comment is, "what do you want me to do about it?" I've never gone back and I tell as many people as possible to stay away from that place.
