Two for $20: Felix and Oscar's Restaurant and Pub,br>

If by some travesty I was able to devour only one more slice of pizza in Des Moines, I would head straight for Felix and Oscar's. The Merle Hay-area staple serves delicious deep-dish pizza in an old-school restaurant and a neighborhood bar. The last time we stopped in, we ate in the bar area around 9 p.m., after most of the other diners had already retired to drinks.
THE GOOD
It's a tough decision between the restaurant's specialty pizza - the F&O Cheese Topper - or the traditional deep-dish pizza that's topped with red sauce instead of cheese. This time I was hungry for cheese. Lots of cheese. So I ordered the special stuffed with sausage, pepperoni and, yes, more cheese. If you're a fan of Chicago-style pizza, this is the closest thing to it in the 515 area code.
The cheese, meats and sauce are layered almost like pie filling surrounded by a white flour crust. The restaurant's owner, Mark Zingerman, said the large size weighs 7 pounds.
I ordered an individual-size pizza, which is meant for one person, and had half of it boxed up for leftovers.
My fiance tried a hamburger, which was as good as any burger. The restaurant serves steak fries for the standard side.
THE BAD
It's hard to complain about Felix and Oscar's, especially since I stick to their pizza on visits. The night we stopped in, there didn't seem to be service at the tables in the bar area. We had to step up to the bar to place our drink order after we waited at our table for several minutes without anyone approaching us. We did it again 10 minutes later to put in our pizza order. On other visits, we've had a server take our order.
THE VERDICT
If you like thick, cheesy pizza, this is a must-try in Des Moines. Once you try the pizza, you might find it hard to venture off to other selections on the menu.
