The owner took our orders at the counter and we settled at an outdoor table. The busy hubbub of the small restaurant faded out and by the time my name was called I could practically taste the salty Greek air. Our food only completed the atmosphere.
The Mediterranean Fajita was a refreshing combo of cucumber sauce, grilled chicken breast, tomatoes, onions, feta cheese, red peppers and cucumbers that danced in my mouth like a joyous Greek festival. Wrapped in a chewy pita, it makes a great choice for a diner who's a little leary of lamb.
The Classic Gyro sandwich is, well, your classic gyro. The meat was seasoned with just a bit of pepper, but the soothing cucumber sauce toned down any spiciness and kept the taste light. While I am frequently disappointed by the heinous amounts of sauce smothered on sandwiches and wraps at other restaurants, Gazali's has the perfect ratio.
Both wraps were accompanied by a delicious Greek side salad with a light vinaigrette and topped with crumbled feta cheese.
It's a stretch to find something bad about this quaint restaurant, but, hey, nobody's perfect. With only one person taking orders at the counter and limited hours, the service was not the model of efficiency. The busy lunch hour brought a line almost out the door, further cramping the already small bistro - a tribute to Gazali's growing popularity, but a larger space would do them good.
If you're looking for a cheap, delicious and all-around pleasant lunch break, Gazali's is the place to go. The atmosphere makes it a great casual date spot, but the attitude is so friendly that you won't feel awkward if you go alone. Opa!
