So you're a basketball fan at the state tournament, and there's a bit of a wait before the next game starts. If you're ready for a meal and you're tired of the concession-stand fare, the metro Des Moines area has more than 600 restaurants.

However, if you don't want the hassle of getting your wrap from the coat check and losing your great parking spot, just head off on foot from the arena through the skywalk system. The list at right includes many of the dining establishments downtown that can be reached on the skywalks, without even putting on a coat.

Of course, there are even more restaurants downtown that can be reached by foot if you are willing to venture outside, but we're trying to make it easy on you visitors so you'll come back.

801 Steak and Chop

801 Steak and Chop

801 Grand Ave., Suite 200 - Des Moines
515-288-6000

This is the place to pull out the little black dress and spend your paycheck on a chic drinking and dining experience. The restaurant even has private dining nooks where you can pull the curtain shut. While 801's swank gentleman's-club appeal feels very masculine, it offers enough refined and sumptuous touches to thrill any diner - from the waiters in fitted green jackets rolling the food up on wooden carts, to the perfect swirl of ice shards glittering in the martinis.

Azalea

pick Azalea

400 Walnut. St. - Des Moines
515-288-9606

Azalea is the definitive fine dining spot downtown, offering an intriguing menu and formal yet open atmosphere. Take in the high ceilings and view of the kitchen, or ask for a table in the more intimate upstairs area, to enjoy a full meal. But don't be afraid to stop in when you just need a seat by the bar to grab an appetizer or dessert with a drink.

Basil Prosperi

Basil Prosperi

801 Grand Ave., Suite 335 - Des Moines

Basil Prosperi is a cozy cafe adored for its consistent menu and affordable entrees. The crowd-pleasing menu, which offers pasta, sandwiches, soups and salads, has stayed generally the same for ten years. The daily pasta specials include a cream-based pasta with fresh asparagus, an option not found on the regular list of eats. This chic cafe is a favorite of people who work downtown. Can't afford to spend a minute away from your desk? Lucky for you, Basil Prosperi caters throughout the skywalk.

Battani's Pizza

400 Locust St., Suite 195 - Des Moines

Battani's Pizza is known for its quick lunchtime service and scrumptious pizza, which can be ordered by the slice. They also serve deli sandwiches and salads, which are an excellent option if you are in the mood for a hearty appetizer. Dive into a plate of cheesebread or french fries and relax on the patio for an easy, breezy afternoon. If you are looking for a quick and healthy lunchtime option, Battani's Pizza also makes soup from scratch daily.

Bruegger's Bagel Bakery

655 Walnut St. on the Skywalk level - Des Moines
515-282-8075

Bruegger's has an exceptional array of bagels, bagel sandwiches and softwiches. Tantalize your taste buds with a warm and gooey cranberry gobbler or the flavorful Thai peanut chicken softwich. If bagels aren't your thing, Bruegger's offers alternatives to the round sandwich topper. Instead, toss your smoked salmon on a wheat wrap, in a bagel bowl, or on ciabatta bread. If you're in the mood for dessert (and who isn't?), sample a slice of heaven in the form of cinnamon and sugar, baked apple, or pumpkin bagels. Check the Web site for nutrition facts and allergen information.

El Azteca

El Azteca

400 Locust St., Skywalk level - Des Moines
515-288-9909

El Azteca is located in Capitol Square at the Skywalk level. A large menu of Mexican favorites attracts large numbers of downtown workers, with lines reaching out the door from around 11:15 a.m. until noon. However, the servers know what they're doing and the line moves quickly, making El Azteca a great place to stop for a fast meal over the lunch hour.

Zen Sushi and Noodle Bar

pick Zen Sushi and Noodle Bar

400 Walnut St., Suite 101 - Des Moines
515-288-9637

Zen is owned by chef Jeremy Morrow, who also owns Azalea and offers enough variety to please even those who aren't quite ready for raw fish. There are several noodle dishes, two vegetarian rolls and an Iowa roll, which features pork. The place has a trendy feel, which makes sense, since it opened around the time a handful of other sushi spots hit Des Moines. But Zen's variety and atmosphere make it stand out from the crowd.
