Just drove by a few days ago and the O Charley's signs were all off of the facade and nobody in the parking lot. Sign on the door said they closed in early November. Too bad. It might not have been gourmet food or anything but there were definately a few items on the menu that kept me coming back.

Tried twice

I am someone who almost always gives everything a "second chance" and I don't usually complain to management about my food. O'Charley's didn't do anything to make my second visit better than the first. Our food was cold, very bland tasting, took forever to get served and to get food and drinks. The only positive was the manager was very apologetic when we finally did complain! Not worth it! Sorry :(

A good overall place to go

Really, the rating says it all. It's good, not outstanding, but better than average. It kind of has an Applebees/Chilis type atmosphere going on but the menu isn't as bland as those places. The free rolls they give with your entree are great, and they usually cycle different promos out every few weeks which opens up the menu options even more. The pretzle coated chicken strips are a great appitizer to start out with, and the sliders are really good too. The next time you are thinking about going to Applebees or Chilis or even Fridays, think about giving O'Charles a try first, you won't be disappointed.

O'Charley's -- O'Dear
By A and D from West Des Moines, August 11, 2008

Overall rating:
3

"D" ate solo at O'Charley's to see what this chain has to offer. In a word: Nothing.

The restaurant had only a few customers during the evining service. "D" decided to eat at the bar. Drink prices are high; higher than the average bar service justifies.

The salad was average; nothing sets it apart from any other mediocre salad in any other average chain restaurant. Server ladled on Way Too Much dressing, rendering this average salad inedible.

The steak is the classic cost-cutting chain restaurant steak: thin, tenderized, near-flavorless,fairly tough, and uninspired upon pseudo-grilling. The rest of the meal comonents were equallyaverageand unimaginative. The value received for price charged ratio is low.

Service was good, although not overly friendly. The atmosphere is the usual chain decor; not particularly interesting, but functional. It is,at least, comfortable.

O"Charley's is a formula restaurant with formulaic management, formulaic decor, formulaic menu, formulaic cooking, formulaic ingredients; in short, maximize profits by carefully holding down on quality and delivering a formulaic profit. Probably not going to work in the economic environment of the restaurant industry presently.

There is just nothing special or particularly great about the O'Charley dining experience. It is simply a Bennigan's, an Appleby's, or any of dozens of similar restaurants under another name.

It is, in a word, average.

Food Quality: Average to below average
Service: Average
Atmosphere: Average
Value: Average to Below Average
Recommendation: In a pinch or in a severe storm when you need caloric warmth, but for a dining experience it is a "Pass."
