Waterfront Seafood Market: User Reviews
Waterfront Seafood Market

I eat at Waterfront at least three to five times a week. I have NEVER had a lass than tasty meal! And the service is fabulous! Shawn, Blake and Jennifer run a top notch restaurant and market. The servers, Samantha (Sam), Amy, Bob, Carrie, Liz, Pam, Ashley, Skeet, Josh and all the others are welcoming, efficient and like old friends. Dave is fabulous at making sure the tables are bussed and cleaned in a timely manner. There is nothing I don't like about Waterfront! There is great value for the money, specials every day, yummy soup and sushi, fresh fish at the market and such a camaraderie among staff and patrons. My rating is FIVE STARS PLUS!

Waterfront is always a delight...We're finfish & shellfish lovers & Waterfront consistently delivers high quality..Panfried Walleye is the best anywhere, goldenbrown, piping hot with big wdges of lemon & tasty tartar sauce.. Recent meals of halibut very juicy & tender...Best baskets anywhere..rock shrimp, fried oysters,halibut,walleye.. French fries & cole slaw are excellent...Only item that is not above average are the salads..iceberg type lettuce with very little deep green color..tomatoes very average, fine but not like the fish..
Saturday lunch specials of half price oysters on the half shell & peel & eat shrimp are both screaming bargains...

I'm a big sushi fan! Waterfront was the first Metro restaurant to bring sushi to the area when it wasn't big (about 10 years ago). Chief La can always recommend something delicious for guest who are new to sushi. I recommend sitting at the sushi bar if you're new to sushi and don't know what to order. All the chiefs have tremendous knowledge!

Nana1758's review included both hearsay and personal insults. First of all, her review came from a place of self-importance, irrelevant to her experience at Waterfront. If she was such a loyal customer for 5 years why couldn't she sit down and wait? Prima donnas must not understand that Waterfront is a favorite for many others besides themselves and it's an extremely busy place this time of year. As far as commenting on a phone call Shawn received, how is that relevant? Was it your business? Do you actually know what he said? Doubtful. All the employees at Waterfront are personable and helpful in getting the customer whatever they request.

I wish that i could give Waterfront two scores - one for service and one for the food. The seafood at Waterfront has always been the best in Des Moines - both in the market and the restaurant. The service however is unfortunately horrible. I was once a loyal patron but will never return after the service I received from Shawn Hanke, son of Ted the owner and the main man at the seafood counter. At 11 AM this morning, I walked in and asked for 1 lb of sushi grade salmon (as I have been doing for the past 5 years) and he said that there was someone in the back cutting it up and that it would be a minute. After 15 minutes I politely asked how much longer it would be and he said "he's back there cutting it up right now - do you want to watch him do it? You can come back here and do it yourself it you think you could do it faster." You know what Mr. Hanke - if that's the way you're going to treat your customers I'd rather not support your business and hope that others read this and will rethink their patronage. I walked out and will never return. And one more thing; as I was sitting there waiting for the salmon that never came, Shawn answered a phone call, said "Hello" and quickly handed the phone off to another employee saying - "Here - I can't understand her - she's some kind of Asian." So unfortunate considering the food is so great but I just can't support a business that treat their customers that way.

If you love seafood, you have to visit the Waterfront. They fly their fresh seafood in daily, and you can certainly tell its high quality. I absolutely love their sushi, although ordering is always a hard task for me as I like so many things on the menu. Another favorite is the grilled tuna with a baked potato and veggies. No matter what I order for my entree here, I always order a salad because their creamy parmasean house dressing is one of my favorite dressings Ive ever had. Try dipping the fresh rolls in to it-heavenly. The atmosphere isnt much for entertaining guests, and it tends to be an older crowd-but what it lacks in atmosphere, it definitely makes up for in quailty and taste.

Splash is a classy joint-and loved by many seafood fans. Its fairly pricey, but worth it for an elegant dining experience with fresh, expertly prepared food. Its formal enough to celebrate an occasion, yet still casual enough to stop by for dinner on a whim. They have recently added a raw bar, that I look forward to trying. You can order shell fish, oyster and caviar. They offer steak and chicken selections for the non-seafood lover, that were highly reviewed by my fish hating boyfriend. I tried the Mahi Mahi and was delighted!

My husband took me to dinner on New Years Eve for the 4 course special they ran that night and the appetizer was adequate the soup the taste was good but there was bits of cartilage through it I found 7 or 8 bits it was like they had not been cleaned the crab right .... the Lobster and Steak were cooked wonderfully but the side dishes were not worth being eaten. the Risotto was clumpy and dry, hubby said that the Garlic mashed potatoes were not any better. The Asparagus wrapped in Prosciutto was steamed but not finished off on the grill so seemed 1/2 done and then there was the Creme Brulee that they had on the menu for Desert .... we ordered it and was told that they other restaurant was open later so it all had been sent over there. We were told if we wanted it we could drive to Ankeny to the other store. Your would think they would keep some for the people that were not finished with there supper.
