4 to try: Gyros
Gazali’s, 1205 25th St.
The Gyro Classic at Gazali’s is — as you would expect — a classic version of the Greek sandwich. A popular spot in Dogtown, Gazali’s makes its gyro on a warm pita that’s lightly toasted, with thick wedges of plump red tomato, crisp iceberg lettuce, thin strips of red onion and a cool cucumber sauce that tones down any spice. The star is the lamb, of course, sliced thin and seared to a light crisp, which reserves all the meat’s flavor and juices and light pepper seasoning. It’s simple and delicious, with no frills or unexpected extras.
