Five best pizza restaurants in Des Moines
By W.E. Moranville, Datebook Diner
Special to Metromix
Pizza ranks right up there with barbecue as a specialty that gets diners rolling up their sleeves to argue what’s best. When I blogged about my task of choosing the top five pizzas in town, diners offered opinions and a huge range of styles — from Casey’s and Big Tomato by the slice to sophisticated full-service spots like Centro.
In the end, I narrowed the field by choosing only sit-down restaurants (benches don’t count). My picks aren’t just the best five pizzas in town, but the five best restaurants for pizza in town; that is, aside from the pie, I also considered whether or not you’d want to sit in the restaurant and eat it.
The atmosphere didn’t need to be fancy, just, well, not a dump. A certain well-worn, rough-and-tumble, been-there-forever charm adds to the appeal of many of our best time-honored pizzerias. But don’t think for a minute you have to endure sloppy squalor to get a great pie. These five spots prove it.
Pictured: Wig and Pen Pizza Pub in Ankeny serves delicious Chicago-style pizza — the cheese is on the bottom, and it’s covered in ingredients and a tangy sauce.
