Fresh View: Eat in Ames
Ames. Is it Siberia? Just a college town? Too long of a drive?
None of the above. Ames is just a hop, a skip, and a 30 to 40 minute drive from Des Moines, depending on how fast you speed. Beyond that, Ames is full of cool places to hang out and awesome food you can enjoy on a student budget. There are tons of great ethnic restaurants, hidden cafe treasures and superior street food in the wee hours.
As an Iowa State University alum and Ames commuter, I'm loaning my expertise to the masses. Sure, you've heard of the legendary Hickory Park and Great Plains, but where else can one get a great plate of food for under ten bucks? Stick with me. Trust me, these places are worth the drive.
So what's the key to being a successful Campustown restaurant? Stay open late, of course. Jeff's Pizza, located at 2402 Lincoln Way (http://www.jeffspizzashop.com/ames-pizza.php), boasts late hours and delicious hand tossed-pizza. Here, Lindsey Demro, 20, and Anna Gilliam, 22, show off a sausage slice.
