2010 Restaurant Trends of the Year

1. Barbecue revolution: In the past few years, Des Moines has emerged as Barbecue City, giving the diner plenty of options for a casual, any-night dinner out. The trend continues, and I discovered some new-in-2010 spots worthy of the barbecue-enthusiast’s attention. A full-service sit-down venue, Jethro’s BBQ and Jake’s Smokehouse Steaks in Altoona serves up amazing cold-smoked steaks in addition to barbecue. The more casual, order-at-the-counter Smokey D’s opened a new location in the downtown Gateway area, and also expanded into larger digs on Northwest Second Avenue, a location I enjoyed for its admirable ribs, brisket and wings.
