Monterrey Mexican Restaurant
8801 University Ave., Suite 29 - Clive515-457-8900
The Monterrey was a very enjoyable restaurant. The service was very fast and always ready to help you if needed. The waiters/waitresses made it a great family/friendly restaurant by walking around with a big smile on their face. The food was delicious! They had such big portions of food that was priced really well. Their was a lot of different variety, you wouldn't know their was that many different types of Mexican food, until you go to Monterrey. I will definitely be visiting Monterrey again and maybe bring a friend next time!

One of my families favorite places to eat is a Mexican restaurant. We like the neighborhood feel of the smaller-family owned ones. We chose “Monterrey”, at 8801 University Ave, in Clive. Inside was festive and colorful. It had brightly painted booths and chairs surrounding the area, along with hispanic paintings and artwork hanging around the establishment.
We were greeted right away and then seated- they were very friendly. As soon as we sat, a gentleman brought us warm chips and salsa to our table. Briefly after that our waiter was there to take our drink orders. Within seconds our drinks had arrived. We all ordered- my Dad: the beef taco salad(6.50), with an extra beef enchilada(1.95), my Mom: a chicken quesadilla (2.99), and for myself: a chicken burrito(7.99)-which comes with a side of rice, lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream. WOW! That’s all I can say- our food was to us within minutes along with a new basket of chips and salsa, and drink refills. We were all pleasantly surprised at the portion sizes-they were very large. Everything tasted fabulous!!
It’s fair to say, my family is addicted, we will definitely make this a regular stop for us. With amazing food, reasonably priced and amazing service-that’s enough to win me over every time!

My family enjoys the Monterrey locations in Clive and West Des Moines. Both are located in strip-malls and off the main road, which can make them hard to find. The decor is bright and cheerful with Mexican themes in the woodwork and wall art. My little brother likes the sombrero you get to wear on your birthday.
The menu is very large and dishes can be ordered individually or with a side of beans and rice. I ordered the Pollo Fundito dish and the portion was large enough to share. I have ordered it more than once and enjoy the flavors. The outer shell is crunchy and the rest kind of melts in your mouth. My dad enjoys their fajitas - usually one to three people can share a single order. The kids' meals are not very exciting - avoid the chicken nuggets and burgers as Mexican food is clearly the specialty here. We all love the chips and salsa you get free with your meal and can be refilled. None of the dishes are very spicy. People with different tastes may need to ask them to spice it up a little.
The best thing about Monterrey is the service. They treat you like a friend. Almost always there is a very short wait for food and the drinks are refilled quickly. They do a great job with large groups and we almost always go there with other families.
One of the few problems with Monterrey is that because there are many families it can be noisy. I would not recommend it for a date but we almost always go there at lunch and it may be better for couples at dinner.
Overall Monterrey is an excellent choice for families with kids ages 7 and up. This is especially true if you want to get in and out in a hurry. The Clive location is near Toys r Us and Babies r Us. It is also good for families on a budget. Coupons are sometimes available in the free local weekly papers.
We will go back in the future and have this restaurant in our regular group of places we like to visit.

For the past five years, the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals has found roaches at Monterrey. The restaurant is given a week for pest control and if they are gone after a week, allowed to continue to operate. Apparently it doesn't matter that the problem reoccurs right afterwards. BEWARE OF ROACHES -- read the most recent report yourself at dia.iowa.gov/food/controller.aspx?cmd=viewInspection&t=634135053240000000&i=SPLATT&eid=RS00-0066715

I have always had wonderful food at Monterrey. My favorite Mexican dish is usually always enchiladas, but my favorite are the Fajitas here. They fresh and spicy! The atmosphere is relaxed and fun-a great place to meet my girl friends for dinner!
